dreams of faraway places…

I’ve been really fortunate to meet some special people through my business, and Katharine Harringer (@agirlinmadrid for all you Twitter followers) is one of them. I first met her as a customer, who was on her way to a new life in Madrid, and we quickly became long-distance friends. She’s a talented photographer/stylist/epicurean and I am enjoying her daily musings about her food passion and life in Europe on her blog called A Girl In Madrid. She has been in town visiting family and we had a chance to meet for tea and scones and delightful tales of her adventures. Such a classy girl–she even brought me a beautiful bouquest of hydrangeas and some delectable olive butter from  Spain! Lucky me.

messy desk: bad or brilliant…

Yes. I admit it. My desk (Who am I kidding? My whole house…) is a mess. I used to worry about it, but lately, I’ve adopted a rather blissful “Bite Me!” attitude about the whole thing.

I’m on a rant, because my daughter told me she thinks I’m so lucky ’cause I get to stay home and have coffee with my staff all day. Whereas she is forced to endure the drudgery of grade-five prison every day when she leaves the house (not exaggerating, she actually thinks she’s in prison 6 hours of the day). Poor dear…can’t imagine what she’s gonna think about paying taxes when I put her out on the curb with her Barbie suitcase when she’s 18 (oh yeah…big talk…I’ll be the mom hanging on to my kids’ arms begging them to live with me when they’re 30 and trying to escape)!

Contrary to what my children AND my mother think, this is not what my day “at work” looks like!

photo by Theo Westenberg via The Bella Life blog

It looks a whole lot more like this…only way more paper and empty coffee cups all over the desk:

It’s not the work that’s really got me cheesed off (I absolutely love my work…except doing quarterly taxes and the payroll…hate that). It’s the mess that I have created that’s really bugging me, and apparently it’s bugging my beloved assistants, Kim and Tracy, who are threatening to quit if they have to climb over any more piles of boxes, catalogues and week-old Starbuck’s cups just to get in the door!

Apparently Albert Einstein said, “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, then what are we to think of an empty desk?” (don’t quote me on that quote). Hmmm…the brainiac’s desk looks an awful lot like mine (the cheeky part of me is just itching to type “bite me” right about now…must…show…restraint…).

Sigh. In case you haven’t figured it out yet…I can’t procrastinate any longer…I actually have to clean up my office. Where’s the shovel…I know it’s in here somewhere.

Who’s Nicole Jane?…

Well I’m sure she’s a lovely person, but she’s not me. She’s my company’s name. After months of writing this blog, I just realized that there isn’t any place to find out who I am or what my name is. Bad blogger! Bad blogger! Must talk to my tech team and get that sorted out.

My name is Jennifer Findlay, and I own Nicole Jane Home. My daughter’s name is Jane and we share the middle name, Nicole. I think I might have made a mistake naming the business, though, ’cause everyone–and I mean everyone–calls me Nicole. Even my girlfriends think it is riotously funny to say, “Hi Nicole…” when they call me.

Not that I mind being called Nicole, it’s just that I really think that people like to know who they’re talking to (whether it’s email, blogs, Twitter, etc.), and they want the straight goods on your name.

I’m a middle-aged decor fanatic and I started my business two years ago, because I thought Canada needed a good source online (we really didn’t have much going online at that time…we’re getting there). Little did I know that my American friends would make up 90% of my business (consider yourself wrapped in a big ‘ol Canadian bear hug).

I’m married to an arm-chair comedien, Mark, and we have two great kids–Sam & Jane. I try not to write too much stuff about the kids, ’cause they get really cheesed, and the internet is still such a wide-open arena–you get my drift.

If you asked me what a blog was eight months ago, I would have said, “…a muddy hole in a swamp?” If you asked me what Twitter was eight months ago, I would have said, “…is that the guy who always cuts me off at the cross-walk?” At least I knew what Faceboook is, but I don’t go on it much now that they got rid of Scrabulous–bastards!

If you’re sick of my rants, blame my husband…yeah, the hilarious guy! He dragged me kicking and screaming into the world of technology and made me sit in my desk chair and learn all about it. I could just kiss him for that, but I won’t ’cause I kissed him yesterday, and that’s enough for one week!

I’m having a blast getting to know the blogging and Twittering worlds out there. So far, my experience has been so positive and it just reinforces what I’ve always thought–we’re all the same out there, and we’re really interested in each other. For those of you who haven’t tried Twitter yet–do it. It’s much more instantaneous, and it’s fascinating. You can follow me on Twitter @nicolejanehome.

grazie molto…

If you speak Italian, you’ll know I’m very grateful. It was a good week for Nicole Jane Home, and we were lucky enough to be posted on two blogs. Yippeeee!!! The first blog, Think Shabby, is beautiful, but I can’t understand a word ’cause it’s in Italian. Well worth a look, though–the photos are gorgeous and it’s all about Shabby Chic, which I love!

The second blog, timesunion.com, is authored by Janet Reynolds in New York. She blogs about “filling your home with the right things”–amen! Janet graciously covered our 60% cushion sale. What the heck…here’s a big Grazie Molto, Janet!

the secret weekend

A couple of years ago, Mark and I decided it was time to be alone for a weekend, so we sent the children to their aunt’s house, and told everyone (except my sister) that we were going out of town. The twist was that we stayed at the best hotel ever–our own home! It was sneaky and fantastic.

After a night of watching all the movies we never get to watch, we woke up on Saturday morning, whipped up some lattes and watched a documentary called The Secret. Many of you are probably familiar with it, because the book and the movie have been out for a few years now. It’s an inspirational movie about declaring your desires or life goals and sending them out to the universe, so they can be realized. Believe me…I tend to be a wee bit on the sceptical side, but I loved the positive message and the “just do it” attitude. Hey…if Oprah did a show about it, it must be good!

We broke for lunch at our favorite on the White Rock beach, where we enjoyed food, wine, and conversation! When we returned home, I showed Mark how to create a vision board. We moved the furniture in the living room and sat on the floor with stacks of magazines around us. We each clipped piles of photos of anything that appealed to us. Then we designed our own collage of  the pictures on big pieces of bristol board.

When you create a vision board, it’s so much fun to see patterns develop and you gain clarity about what it is you might be having difficulty putting into words. Mark and I each recognized our own patterns developing, and when we finished, we shared our boards with each other. It was a fantastic way to get a deeper understanding of each other’s goals and dreams.

I always like to include words of inspiration. I just love the beautiful little drawing of a tree with this saying:

“Out beyond all ideas of right doing

and wrong doing

there is a field

I’ll meet you there”

by Rumi.

We still have our vision boards mounted in our walk-in closet and we look at them every morning. It’s a good way to start the day, and to remind ourselves what we value in life. It’s also really fun to see what things have materialized and what things are still works in process. It’s time for us to revisit the Findlay Hotel and and create new boards.

I highly recommend a secret weekend and a vision boarding experience for everyone. Don’t get too “in your head” about it, just get a stack of magazines, some scissors and some glue! You’ll surprise yourself by how much fun it is. You might even find it very emotional, so don’t be surprised by that either, and just go with it–a very healthy exercise.

guests welcome…

My sister is the hostess-with-the-mostess. She always fixes up her guest bedroom as if the Queen herself was coming for the visit (hmmm…I just realized that she thinks I’m as fussy as a queen). I love to check out the basket of goodies she leaves on the cedar chest at the end of my bed. It’s usually filled with hand cream, chocolates, bottled water and the piece de resistance–new magazines!

If you want to show your guests how much  you look forward to their visit, put some extra care into setting up the guest room. Or, if you really don’t want them to ever come back, or even stay at all, tell them there’s a super-sized spider living in the room that might hiss and rear up on its back legs if they go near it or even look at it sideways (actually happened to my best friend who was visiting relatives in Australia).

I just had to take a break from typing to have a giggle fit! Australia is now crossed off my bucket list! Who am I kidding? I took it off the list 20 years ago when my husband described a hiking trip when he stumbled upon a rather large snake going across his path–he couldn’t see its head or its tail…that’s how big it was!!! This blog post has gone crazy!

Ahem…I’ve  composed myself and we shall carry on. Here are some rather dignified ideas for hosting your guests. I’d just like to qualify myself by saying that this is a wish list, not necessarily what I will achieve every time someone comes to stay (just sayin’…don’t get your heart set on it).

I have a nasty little secret. I love using other people’s shampoo when I go for a visit. So my first choice for spoiling guests would be a nice little bottle of shampoo.  I’m madly in love with anything by Lollia.

Where there’s shampoo, there has to be fresh towels. It’s handy that I have a warehouse full of them at Nicole Jane Home!

When your guests just can’t tolerate one more minute of your company, they can retreat to their retreat and forget their troubles by immersing themselves in some great magazines.

My other dark secret is that I generally sleep really well at someone else’s house. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I like to experience different bedding. If you can afford it, and you like your guests, I’d recommend really lovely sheets.

I’m a fresh flower fanatic, so I would definitely, if nothing else, make sure my guest had a bouquet to enjoy!

Make sure they have some wickedly good snacks to munch on, or I …er…they…won’t come back!

Once your guest has eaten all that chocolate, I’m pretty sure they’ll need some fluids. I just love bedside water carafes and glasses–they’re just so refined.

When I have guests, they have usually traveled a long distance and made a very special effort to come here, so I like to go the extra mile and thank them. I love to send them home with a little something to remember the trip. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, just something that took a little thought.

magazine affair…

I’m having an affair with my Style At Home magazine. Is that wrong?

I’m especially infatuated with the May issue all about color. On page 474, there’s a pictorial Before & After on furniture paint treatments that I’m swooning over. The trend spotting on page 40 is all about my favorite color: turquoise–what’s not to love? My favorite section is always the High versus Low, and this month’s, on pages 58 and 59, is a particularly fetching combination of bright corals and florals. I even love the double-page Benjamin Moore advertisement featuring celebrity designers!

I can’t show you the May issue’s photos, but I can show you April’s. So here is a look into one of Canada’s fabulous shelter magazines, my beloved Style At Home.

chocolat ooh la la…

Easter in Paris looks très delicious at Patrick Roger‘s chocolate boutique. I came across this amazing chocolatier in a fantastic blog called The Paris Kitchen, definitely worth your time to take a look. This just confirms my theory that I am actually a displaced Parisienne, who should return to her make-believe homeland immédiatement!

front door makeover…

Does your front door say “Hi..come closer…knock on me…there are fabulous people inside.”?

A hundred years ago, I was a realtor, and by the end of the walk to the front door, I could usually tell how well a showing would go. Surprisingly, a lot of people don’t realize the impact that their walkway, porch and front door have on visitors. A Santa doormat isn’t cute in February!

Your front entry doesn’t have to be grand, it just has to be really tidy and have elements of impact. I’m guilty of not paying enough attention to my front entrance. The sandblasted angel in the oval glass panel on the door just isn’t doing anything for me anymore. It was actually the selling point for a TV production company that shot an episode of a series at my house, but it has got to go. I think the angel is actually whispering to me, “Help. I’m stuck in the 80′s and I can’t get out!”

If you’re considering fixing up your entry, I think the door is the most important feature (as long as you’ve fixed the potholes in the sidewalk and the exposed wires on the doorbell first). A new door or a lick of paint can instantly add curb appeal. Unless you hate your neighbours, choose your colour carefully–purple is rarely a wise choice.

This makeover is featured on Country Living Magazine’s website, and it’s a good example of how much impact a simple change can make (try to look past the Christmas decor). I am madly in love with the red light fixtures.

Here’s another good example from Apartment Therapy. Red packs a punch, even in really small doses.

ultimate green space…

A pal of mine, Mike Agerbo, owns a media company specializing in technology–Get Connected. He hosts TV and radio shows all about the latest technical news, and I popped by his blog this morning (I can hear Mark falling off his chair…he gave up on the dream of me actually sharing his obsession with all things technical a long time ago. Don’t get excited honey, it’s only a blog post, I’m still not letting you buy anymore gadgets!).

I was struck by a post by Kevin Lau about architect Gary Chang, who designed 24 rooms inside a 344 square foot apartment in Hong Kong. You have got to watch the video to believe it! By the end of it, I was just so grateful that I live in Canada, where we apparently have a gluttony of space to fill with furniture, families and dogs!!!
