cool collage…

Looking for a great weekend project? I just love these photo/picture collages. Who doesn’t have photos stashed away that need to be framed and hung?

This one is quite unique. I love that it wraps around the corner!

The collage wall is just so impressive in this setting. I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on that table and chair set too!

friday night happy happy..

House is clean (never happens)…kids are both at friends (never happens)…hubby’s on the way home late (always happens)…the dogs aren’t at the windows harassing passersby (never happens)…I’ve got time to read new magazines with a glass of chilled wine and my beloved sappy smooth hits playing on the stereo without someone saying their ears are actually bleeding (never, ever, ever happens).

This is a line-up of SOME of the magazines that have been backing up on my desk. Clearly, the fact that I have multiple issues of the same magazine is an indication of just how far behind I am. I need a weekend just to clear up the log jam. What a wonderful dilemma!

Here’s a Friday assignment for you: Read a new magazine this weekend! You won’t regret it…EVER.

hooray for orange…

In case I haven’t mentioned it (over and over again while looking in the mirror)…I love the colour of my red hair. Maybe that’s why I love the colour orange! So here’s my little Friday indulgence…let’s hear it for ORANGE!!!

The February/March issue of Lonny Magazine features the home of L.A. designer, Betsy Burnham. She uses just the right hits of orange throughout her home. Anything more would tilt the colour into the “annoying” category.

Drooooooool. Hermes chose the colour of my hair for its iconic line of products, including their signature boxes which have become a sought-after decor accessory!!!!

This is a painting I did a few years ago (acrylic on canvas). Please excuse the photo’s quality–I am a LOUSY…er….LAZY…er…IMPATIENT photographer.

painting by Jennifer Findlay

Orange is goofy and playful…but she can be pretty darn SHMEXY too (she might be a tad unsteady on anything higher than flip flops though…sigh). Just look at these Christian Louboutin shoes from Polyvore.Me like…

me want…

orange bike

(hmmm…I should submit that for some haiku contests).

by Orange Girl Photographs

I found this bike on a brilliantly-monikered website–Orange Girl Photographs. Apparently Orange Girl used to drive an orange Superbeetle VW bug when she was in art school. Guess what! I used to drive an orange Superbeetle VW bug when I was at school. Sadly (sorry mom & dad)…I was taking Political Science at UBC…not ART at Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design!!!!!

Last, but by no means least…the beloved Creamsicle–nature’s creamiest orange cool treat. Gotta go phone Mark to pick some up on the way home from work…bye for now.

weekend menu…

Did I mention I love Fridays? I’m going to treat my family to a home-cooked meal this weekend (don’t fall off your office chair Mark…you’re so dramatic). My first inclination is to pour through my collection of Bon Appetit magazines, but I stop and ask myself, “Why not pull out the tried-and-true, Ina Garten?” I have all of her cook books (my favourite, for obvious reasons, has to be Barefoot in Paris), and I use them regularly–they never disappoint.

Funny how this is the first recipe my eye lingered on..Profiteroles. Yum! Forget the profiteroles, let’s just drink chocolate for dinner (I’ve got the kids’ votes for sure). You can download these recipes on the Barefoot Contessa website.

Ina’s Sole Muniere looks exactly like the dish that Julia Child ate during her first meal in Paris when she and her husband, Paul, first arrived. I just about climbed right into the TV screen to get the fork full of sole that Meryl Streep lifts to her mouth in Julie & Julia. I’m going out on a limb with this dish ’cause my 13-year-old son does not crave fish like the rest of us, but he’s on a health kick (gotta love 13 year olds), so I might just be able to swing it.

Don’t worry, I will whip up a salad too, and maybe even some buttermilk mashed potatoes with loads of garlic and butter. Wish me luck!

pink power…

Did anyone see the Grammy’s? Wasn’t Pink‘s performance awesome? Well I think the colour pink is awesome too (wireless technology allows me to actually hear you groaning about that segue…really).

Pink has been unfairly maligned since the crazy 1980′s when everything looked like I was wearing rose-coloured glasses (circa Miami Vice). My sister even built a house that had pink EVERYWHERE…even the floor tiles…good times. I’m not suggesting we go overboard with pink, I just think it’s such a beautiful colour, which flatters every complexion (I should really write a book about designing rooms that accentuate our looks when we’re in them). Used in moderation, I think it’s perfect.

I just had to indulge myself this morning by hunting for some pink, and here are the results. I hope it gives you a little Friday inspiration (yippeeee…I love Fridays…so much promise for the weekend ahead). Put some pink in your life this weekend, even if it’s just the prettiest pink-iced cupcake you can find. Vive la Rose!

I came across a great blog called Shelter, and I just couldn’t resist staring at this photo. The black houndstooth and the peachy pink are such a great combo–and I could swoon over that tufted headboard. What little girl (young or old) wouldn’t want to snuggle into that bed!!!

One of my favourite interior designers, Tobi Fairley, featured this photo on her blog. That pink velvet chair must be mine! Notice how it works with the cool-toned pink wall colour. I once heard that pink is a colour that never clashes with itself–it can be used together in different variations (now that I think about it, can’t any colour be used with itself?). If there are any colour aficionados reading this, please let me know if that’s true or not.

Ooh la la. What a gorgeous bed. What a gorgeous carpet. What sumptuous bed linens. That’s it…I’m packing my bags and moving to Paris immediately–Mark, meet me at the airport with the kids and dogs!

How ‘s this for shmexy? I found this image on photographer, Adam Chinitz‘ website. Definitely not my mother’s idea of how a lady is supposed to decorate (don’t worry, she’d get a kick out that comment). I love it!

Sigh…now this is just bliss. Somebody pick me up off the floor…I think I just fainted

The combination of hot pink and silver is striking. Check out Sarah Klassen’s blog Haute Design for more fabulous pink decor.

There. I feel better now that I’ve had my fix of pink. Don’t you?

Friday assignment…

So here’s your Friday assignment: Do not let this day go by without hunting down some fresh flowers.

Here’s a little inspiration from Design Sponge–it’s a gorgeous blog worthy of a daily visit! If you’re lucky enough to live somewhere with citrus trees and sunshine, add some branches with small lemons or oranges to a simple arrangement and watch the magic happen. As for me…I’ll have to settle for some branches off my sleeping cedar and maples trees–our northern version of beautiful!

By the way, Mark, if you think there’s something strangely familiar about my new vases, don’t bother looking for your favorite old sweater!
