Reisenthel Roulette…

Filed under: Uncategorized — jennifer @ 10:26 am

For lack of a better term, it’s time to pick your brain again (my smarty-pants sister hates it when I use that phrase)! I need to order in new Reisenthel baskets and I’m curious which patterns you prefer. I’d love your input in the polls below!

happy summer happy color…

Can you hear me sighing with relief? It’s finally summer! Although the sun isn’t shining here, we’ve been promised a peak at it later in the week. When I think of summer, I think of color, so what better post than one on color in decor? I’ve collected an eclectic assortment of colorful rooms.

My inspiration for this blog is a bungalow designed by a fabulous Canadian designer, Jonathan Legate.

I can see myself living happily in a room like the one above. The combination of warm buttery yellow walls with just the right red–especially the striped chair–and the gorgeous black toile drapes is such an inviting combination! Just the right degree of cozy & drama.

I think I finally get it…fabric is king! Look at how fantastic this room looks with that fabric. I might not give it a second look if I was leafing through swatches, but a designer like Jonathan has the experience to see the big picture and understand how it will make a room shine. Yet another example of why it pays to hire a designer.

Pottery Barn’s summer paint colors for Benjamin Moore are really interesting. As paint chips, they don’t jump out at me, but once I see them in a vignette, they’re fabulous. The brown, blue and red in this room somehow manage to seem light and airy. Go figure! At this point, I think you’ve got a sense of how color-challenged I really am…lettin’ it all hang out here on the pages of this blog.

I just think this cozy turquoise room with the gorgeous-smorgeous bedding is the cat’s meow! I’d never leave my bedroom if it looked like this!

You know me…gotta get a little orange in here somewhere. This appeals to the modern side of me.

For some reason, I’m craving a mojito and a fan! I doubt that Mark would actually join me on this verandah for a drink…hmmmm…wait a minute..!

This rosy red is “in” right now. So if you want to be super cool (just like me), rose is the color for you! I just can’t decorate with it, ’cause it would be a major clash with my red hair–I’m  a big believer in decorating with the colors that flatter you! My mom would probably claim that horizontal stripes on chairs make you look wider…hmmmm!

The boldly colorful couch and the gold gilded picture frame remind me of some of the decor I’ve seen in Britain. It just says, “sit down and we’ll have a really good chat”.

I’m hopeful that this summer will be full of color. Full of friends. Full of fun!

cool collage…

Looking for a great weekend project? I just love these photo/picture collages. Who doesn’t have photos stashed away that need to be framed and hung?

This one is quite unique. I love that it wraps around the corner!

The collage wall is just so impressive in this setting. I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on that table and chair set too!

funky french flatware…

Remember the poll that I ran in an earlier post this week? The results were overwhelmingly in favor of Nicole Jane Home carrying the flatware. I did some research and found out the approximate retail price for the flatware and I would love to get your input now that we know how much they’ll cost. Each set comes with 6 pieces and they appear to be good-quality stainless steel pieces.

beer connoisseurs unite…

I’m thinking of carrying this set of Spiegelau beer glasses, but I need your sage advice before I make any rash decisions! They come gift-boxed as a set of 4, and the idea is that each shape of glass produces a slightly different flavor with the same beer. I think it would be a great host/ess gift, housewarming or birthday gift for the beer connoisseurs in your life. What do you think? They would retail around $40 for the set of 4.

OMG…the girl on the poll looks just like me!!!!

table magic…

You know the old saying, “Doctor, heal thyself.”? Well, I think I’ve got a case of talking and not doing. I sit in my office chair and write my little blog posts about la belle vie, but I’m don’t take my own bossy advice.

If you walked into my bedroom, you would alternate between laughing and crying. It’s a cacophony of styles, furniture, and junk. So, this weekend, I’m puttin’ my money where my mouth is and beginning a mission to transform my sad sanctuary (shhhh…nobody tell Mark…he’s afraid of falling off his wallet…love you, honey).

I know, I know, I always recommend starting your design project with fabrics, but I’m breaking that rule. I’m starting with my bedside tables, because, frankly, they’re flat out annoying. The orange stain on the wood is uuuuugly, and the pulls are, well, let’s just say it…STUPID!

So I’m starting to look for the color that I want to paint the tables. I love the look of this Pottery Barn bedroom (blues & reds together are just wonderful).

I’m really drawn to this room too.

green-eyed beauty…

Who says it’s hard being green? Not me! Next to pink, I think my favorite color is green–particularly Kelly Green and Chartreuse. It’s just lucky for me that green is hot right now (not that’s I’d really care if it wasn’t). Here are some examples of wonderful uses of my second favorite color. Brandon Barre is a talented photograper, and I love, love, love his work. He gets to work with some of my design crushes (including my BFF Candace Olsen. Candace, call me. Let’s do lunch). This is one of his exquisite shots. I love the acid greens with black–drama, baby, drama!

Oh, okay…I’ll show you another one of his amazing photos! Isn’t this divine? The dark flooring is the perfect contrast against the seafoam walls.

This is such a gorgeous wallpaper. When it comes to decorating, one of the most important principles is to choose your upholstery fabrics first and choose your wall color last. I always believe in exceptions, and, in this case, I would choose the wallpaper and then work in the rest of the decor around it. Don’t ya just love that sweet bamboo-esque chair? Bamboo is hot, hot, hot right now. (I have the feeling that somebody’s going to email and say “That isn’t bamboo, you twit!”)

Tobi Fairley is very talented designer. She puts a fresh twist on traditional design, and I’m always giddy when I see her rooms in magazines and websites. Green and silver is a fantastic combination, but leave it to Ms. Fairley to come up with the brilliant idea of using both metals as accents with kelly green!

And what would a blog be without a little jhooshing from Designers Guild? Nottin’ I tells ya! Ahhhhh…green and pink…sigh! Wouldn’t a beautiful little silver aluminum table or a mirrored table look goooooorgeous between these little glamour girls?

Okay…so we’ve now established that I love green, but let me qualify my appreciation a little. I can hate green too (hey, Gemini, can’t help it). I just want to be clear that I can HATE every single color on the spectrum if it’s used poorly. This is an example of the type of design that draws strong negative reactions from me (I apologize to everyone who loves it). If this is your cup of tea, that’s great go for it, but I just won’t be able to visit :)

Now that we got that out of the way, back to something divine. This lovely room from Country Living magazine.

Now get out there and get some green!!!

the secret weekend

A couple of years ago, Mark and I decided it was time to be alone for a weekend, so we sent the children to their aunt’s house, and told everyone (except my sister) that we were going out of town. The twist was that we stayed at the best hotel ever–our own home! It was sneaky and fantastic.

After a night of watching all the movies we never get to watch, we woke up on Saturday morning, whipped up some lattes and watched a documentary called The Secret. Many of you are probably familiar with it, because the book and the movie have been out for a few years now. It’s an inspirational movie about declaring your desires or life goals and sending them out to the universe, so they can be realized. Believe me…I tend to be a wee bit on the sceptical side, but I loved the positive message and the “just do it” attitude. Hey…if Oprah did a show about it, it must be good!

We broke for lunch at our favorite on the White Rock beach, where we enjoyed food, wine, and conversation! When we returned home, I showed Mark how to create a vision board. We moved the furniture in the living room and sat on the floor with stacks of magazines around us. We each clipped piles of photos of anything that appealed to us. Then we designed our own collage of  the pictures on big pieces of bristol board.

When you create a vision board, it’s so much fun to see patterns develop and you gain clarity about what it is you might be having difficulty putting into words. Mark and I each recognized our own patterns developing, and when we finished, we shared our boards with each other. It was a fantastic way to get a deeper understanding of each other’s goals and dreams.

I always like to include words of inspiration. I just love the beautiful little drawing of a tree with this saying:

“Out beyond all ideas of right doing

and wrong doing

there is a field

I’ll meet you there”

by Rumi.

We still have our vision boards mounted in our walk-in closet and we look at them every morning. It’s a good way to start the day, and to remind ourselves what we value in life. It’s also really fun to see what things have materialized and what things are still works in process. It’s time for us to revisit the Findlay Hotel and and create new boards.

I highly recommend a secret weekend and a vision boarding experience for everyone. Don’t get too “in your head” about it, just get a stack of magazines, some scissors and some glue! You’ll surprise yourself by how much fun it is. You might even find it very emotional, so don’t be surprised by that either, and just go with it–a very healthy exercise.

guests welcome…

My sister is the hostess-with-the-mostess. She always fixes up her guest bedroom as if the Queen herself was coming for the visit (hmmm…I just realized that she thinks I’m as fussy as a queen). I love to check out the basket of goodies she leaves on the cedar chest at the end of my bed. It’s usually filled with hand cream, chocolates, bottled water and the piece de resistance–new magazines!

If you want to show your guests how much  you look forward to their visit, put some extra care into setting up the guest room. Or, if you really don’t want them to ever come back, or even stay at all, tell them there’s a super-sized spider living in the room that might hiss and rear up on its back legs if they go near it or even look at it sideways (actually happened to my best friend who was visiting relatives in Australia).

I just had to take a break from typing to have a giggle fit! Australia is now crossed off my bucket list! Who am I kidding? I took it off the list 20 years ago when my husband described a hiking trip when he stumbled upon a rather large snake going across his path–he couldn’t see its head or its tail…that’s how big it was!!! This blog post has gone crazy!

Ahem…I’ve  composed myself and we shall carry on. Here are some rather dignified ideas for hosting your guests. I’d just like to qualify myself by saying that this is a wish list, not necessarily what I will achieve every time someone comes to stay (just sayin’…don’t get your heart set on it).

I have a nasty little secret. I love using other people’s shampoo when I go for a visit. So my first choice for spoiling guests would be a nice little bottle of shampoo.  I’m madly in love with anything by Lollia.

Where there’s shampoo, there has to be fresh towels. It’s handy that I have a warehouse full of them at Nicole Jane Home!

When your guests just can’t tolerate one more minute of your company, they can retreat to their retreat and forget their troubles by immersing themselves in some great magazines.

My other dark secret is that I generally sleep really well at someone else’s house. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I like to experience different bedding. If you can afford it, and you like your guests, I’d recommend really lovely sheets.

I’m a fresh flower fanatic, so I would definitely, if nothing else, make sure my guest had a bouquet to enjoy!

Make sure they have some wickedly good snacks to munch on, or I …er…they…won’t come back!

Once your guest has eaten all that chocolate, I’m pretty sure they’ll need some fluids. I just love bedside water carafes and glasses–they’re just so refined.

When I have guests, they have usually traveled a long distance and made a very special effort to come here, so I like to go the extra mile and thank them. I love to send them home with a little something to remember the trip. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, just something that took a little thought.
